Goddesses in Everywoman: An Introduction

Goddesses in Everywoman is a book written by Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen highlighting the archetypal potential of seven Greek Goddesses.Whilst this book came to me by chance, it has become central to my practice this year in examining such Goddesses in a contemporary manner. Bolen suggests that women's personalities and behaviour are governed by these seven archetypes and that we can embody one or more of these Goddesses at various stages of life.

My work attempts to expose the fluidity or partial failure of archetypes, based on the variability of the human experience and ego. Whilst I may present my interpretation of Aphrodite, for example, in certain portrayals she will display characteristics more akin to Athena or Demeter. Such ambiguity is essential in relating to the Goddess archetype in a contemporary context.
